Now, the teachings of yoga.

  • To yoke, to bind, to unite the mind body and spirit to become one.

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, a foundational text for the philosophy of yoga, it is stated we must create complete mastery over the modifications of the mind. That is the core of Yoga.

How we begin to find this relationship to calming and expanding space within our mind can be found through various yogic paths. Though many are familiar with the popular western practice of asana or the physical practice, yoga is a vast ocean of philosophy, history, culture and study. I view the physical practice as dipping your toe into this ocean that is begging you to dive in.

In my practice and study, I intend on incorporating as many aspects of the practice as possible, taking students far beyond the physical movement toward a deeper understanding of the roots of yoga.

In this practice, we can find ways to incorporate breath, movement and connection to the body while being intentional to uplift the indigenous wisdom and teachers of these lineages who are very much alive and working toward equity.

As I teach and provide yoga and pranayama (or breathwork), I maintain the cultural practice of yoga and look to those of the diaspora to lead us into the future of yoga.

  • "I have never used yoga as an end itself but merely as a means of preparing myself for a more effective strugle." -Angela Y. Davis

I have had the honor of teaching the yoga practice for over a decade. My first influences in yoga asana were in the tradition of Iyengar that helped me focus on the alignment of our bodies in relation to the posture as well as how to utilize props and variations of the postures to support as many body types as possible. My trauma informed training has guided me to hold space for those who have experienced extreme forms of trauma in their life.

I have facilitated spaces for those who have experienced domestic violence, those who are healing from addiction, queer and BIPOC identifying people. My goals is to create space where all can use the tool of the physical practice and philosophy to become more embodied and begin to find a path to heal from trauma creating more resiliency.

  • "at the end of the exhale, breath surrenders to the quietude. For a moment you hang in the balance-suspended. In the fertile spaciousness. That is the source of breath." -Vijnana Bhairava Tantra

Breath is the bridge for prana (life energy)to go in and out of our life forms (bodies). When we begin to understand and practice with the breath, we begin to see the ways we can create space. We can slow down the functions of the body and sooth the nervous system. In my work with breath, I provide structure for students to understand the dynamics of their own breathing, how we can create elasticity and capacity in the lungs for better breathing, and create lasting health benefits.

Practice with me.

I offer private and group yoga, philosophy, and pranayama sessions. All sessions are through a trauma informed lense and can be made accessible to your needs. Check out my Work With Me page to schedule a call or see the offerings I provide in the Lawrence community below!

Be Moved Studio

Functional Yoga- Fridays at 9:00am (Beginning October 3rd, 2024)

When we approach Yoga Asana thoughtfully with accessibility and functionality at the center, we create a space where the phrase “yoga is for every body” becomes an action. Functional yoga is not a new style of yoga, but rather an approach to your practice. “Functional yoga is based on the scientifically-proven premise that our skeletons, tissues, physiology, temperament and motivation are made and organized in a way that is uniquely ours.” (Anat Geigar) If our whole bodies and minds are indeed unique, our practice must reflect and affirm us.

During our class we will utilize our bodies functional range of motion, movements that are reflected in our daily lives, refrain from over extension and focus on how the asana (postures) feel rather than how they look.

This approach to yoga asana offers an accessible path where all bodies, abilities and levels of experience are truly welcomed and honored. We will use vedic philosophy as our guiding principles and explore yoga how it’s intended to be, an inner experience.

Yoga for People of Color - Thursdays at 7:00pm

This donation class provides yoga practice that sustains a traditional commitment to yoga’s roots while also honoring the explicit recognition of, and healing from, racism and its intersecting oppressions. This class is a healing space where BIPOC+ are not “othered”, where BIPOC+ are the norm instead of the exception. The goal of BIPOC+ Yoga is to provide an opportunity for people of color to be seen and loved as they make their way through a regular yoga practice. We respectfully remind you that this class is only for those who identify as BIPOC.
