Yoga, at its core, is a practice of looking inward and remembering our inherent wholeness. Through the practice of asana, we move the body and balance our energies in preparation of our inward journey. However, many do not yet see themselves in the practice. Asana can often feel intimidating and appears as more of an outward performance. Functional yoga is an approach to our yoga asana practice where we focus on postures and movements that honor your unique body and mind. During our workshop we will explore your ranges of motion, how the body can be supported in a variety of postures and how we can begin to turn inward to best embody the practice. We will focus on the intention of the postures rather than the shape. We will take inspiration from the functional movement world and apply to our asana to encourage sustainability in the practice.
Yoga in its purest form is for every body, and this workshop will take that affirmation into action.
“A functional practice provides for more freedom as participants discover how their body reacts and behaves through playing with movement and poses. It offers a change in perception as people begin to understand their body better, and learn how to move with their body rather than pushing and forcing against it. This invites a shift from resistance to acceptance, and opens to learning how to adapt. Not only can this shift help encourage a more natural flow in the body, but it can move a lot deeper into the mind and beyond.” – Claire Martin
